style="font-family: Times New Roman;"> Peoria Javelinas first baseman Russ Mitchell (Dodgers) is the 2009 recipient of the Arizona Fall League’s Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award.
The Fall League instituted the Stenson Award in 2004 in memory of former AFL player Dernell Stenson, who was killed in 2003 in Arizona during the AFL season. Stenson played for the Grand Canyon Rafters in 1998 and was playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions at the time of his death.
The award is presented annually to the Fall League player who best exemplifies unselfishness, hard work, and leadership. The manager and coaching staff from each of the six Fall League teams nominate one player for the award.
This year’s other nominees were Phoenix Desert Dogs catcher Nevin Ashley (Rays), Scottsdale Scorpions second baseman Chase d’Arnaud (Pirates), Surprise Rafters second baseman Daniel Descalso (Cardinals), Peoria Saguaros catcher Matt McBride (Indians) and Mesa Solar Sox outfielder Bryan Petersen (Marlins).
“Russ Mitchell exemplifies the meaning of the Dernell Stenson Award,” offers Fall League Director Steve Cobb. “Like Dernell Stenson, Russ is one of the top performers in the Fall League and a clubhouse leader. He was an obvious catalyst in the Javelinas’ division championship and berth in our 18th championship game. Baseball is well served when its next generation of players includes the likes of Russ Mitchell.”
In addition to his character and leadership, Mitchell excelled throughout the 2009 Fall League season. The Rome, Georgia native, who was the Dodgers’ 15th-round selection (451th overall) in the 2003 draft, was among the league’s offensive leaders from start to finish. He tied for the league lead in doubles (10) and extra-base hits (16), tied for third in runs batted in (25), tied for fourth in home runs (5) and total bases (57), and tied for fifth in runs (20).
Also a Fall Leaguer in 2008, Mitchell completed a two-year 17-game on-base streak on October 27, 2009 when he hit .383 with 15 runs, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 21 RBI, and an on-base percentage of .486.
He hit. 319 with a .606 slugging percentage in 2009.
The 24-year-old has spent seven seasons in the minor league. He hit .241 for Double-A Chattanooga in the Southern League in 2009.

Dernell Stenson Award Recipients
By Paul Jensen

The Los Angeles Dodgers outfielders Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp both won their first Silver Slugger Awards, emblematic of the best offensive player at each position in the American and National Leagues, on November 12.

The Dodgers were one of three teams with two representatives earning the distinction, joining the Yankees (Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira) and Blue Jays (Aaron Hill and Adam Lind). The last time Los Angeles had two winners in the same season was 1995 when Mike Piazza and Eric Karros won the awards at catcher and first base, respectively. The last Dodger outfielder to capture the award was Kirk Gibson in 1988.

Ethier — Ethier hit .272 while establishing career highs in hits (162), doubles (42), home runs (31), RBI (106), walks (72), and runs (92). The right fielder became the fourth Dodger in franchise history to amass at least 40 doubles and 30 home runs, joining Babe Herman (1930), Raul Mondesi

(1997), and Karros (1999). The Arizona native tied for sixth in the National League in RBI and fifth in doubles.

Ethier also displayed a flair for the dramatic, leading the major leagues with six walk-off hits, including a major-league record-tying four walk-off home runs. Jimmie Foxx in 1940, Roy Sievers in 1957, and Ethier this past season are the only players in baseball history to hit four walk-off homers in a season. In addition, the fourth-year player’s six multi-homer games tied Ryan Howard for the second most in the major leagues, trailing only Albert Pujols (10).

Kemp — Kemp joins the Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman as the only two players in 2009 to claim Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards. Kemp is one of three Dodgers to win both awards in the same season, joining Dusty Baker (1981) and Russell Martin (2007).
<div

The Oklahoma native became the first Dodger in franchise history to post at least 25 homers, 100 RBI, and 30 stolen bases in a season and just the eighth to hit at least 20 homers and steal 30 or more bases.

The Gold Glove center fielder tied a Dodger franchise record by hitting three grand slams this season and he led the squad with 49 multi-hit games. Kemp’s 10 RBI in extra innings was the most by a major leaguer since Juan Gonzalez in 1991 and his .362 average vs. left-handed pitching ranked sixth in the National League.

The Dodger duo of Ethier and Kemp were the first set of Dodger teammates to each drive in 100 runs since Shawn Green and Gary Sheffield in 2001. Ethier, Kemp, and Manny Ramirez combined to hit 76 home runs this season, the second-most prodigious in baseball behind the Phillies’ trio of Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, and Shane Victorino who hit 80.

The last Dodger to win a Silver Slugger was Martin in 2007. Since the creation of the award in 1980, a Dodger has taken home the honor 21 times, led by Piazza’s five trophies.

The Award — The Silver Slugger award winners are determined by a vote of Major League Baseball coaches and managers who name the players they feel are the best offensive producers at each position in both the American and National Leagues. Selections are based on a combination of offensive statistics, including batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage as well as the coaches’ and managers’ general impressions of a player’s overall offensive value. Managers and coaches are not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.

The specially designed Silver Slugger Award will be presented to each player by a representative of the Hillerich & Bradsby Co., makers of Louisville Slugger, the Official Bat of Major League Baseball, in a ceremony early in the 2010 season. The trophy is three feet tall and bears the engraved name of the winner and his Silver Slugger teammates in his respective league.

The Silver Slugger Award was instituted by Louisville Slugger in 1980 as a natural extension of the Silver Bat Award which is, as its name indicates, a silver-plated bat presented by Louisville Slugger to the batting champions in the American and National leagues. This year’s Silver Bat Award winners are Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins and Hanley Ramirez of the Florida Marlins.

__________________________________________________________________

Joe Jareck (Los Angeles Dodgers public relations department) contributed to this story.

Dodgers-White Sox Gold Glovers

Media

Uncategorized
<guid

The White Sox have earned 32 Gold Gloves in their history, led by Hall of Fame shortstop Luis Aparicio, a seven-time honoree.

Kemp — Kemp led all major-league center fielders and ranked third among all big-league outfielders with 14 outfield assists. His .995 fielding percentage ranked third among National League center fielders behind Gold Glove winner Shane Victorino and Nate McLouth. Kemp made just two errors.

Kemp is the first Dodger outfielder to win a Gold Glove since center fielder Steve Finley in 2004, also the last time more than one Dodger won the award in the same season. The only other everyday Dodger Gold Glove center fielder was Willie Davis who took home the honor three consecutive years from 1971–73.

Kemp logged 1,355.1 innings in center field in 2009, the most by a Dodger center fielder in a Gold Glove season.

Over the last two seasons, Kemp’s 30 outfield assists are tied for second in the major leagues with Baltimore’s Nick Markakis. Houston’s Hunter Pence leads with 32.Hudson — In 145 games at second base, Hudson made just eight errors and posted a .988 fielding percentage to tie for fourth in the National League and rank fifth on the franchise’s single-season list by a second baseman, trailing Jody Reed (.993 in 1993), Jackie Robinson (.992 in 1951), Charlie Neal (.989 in 1959), and Mark Grudzielanek (.989 in 2002).

Hudson becomes the third Dodger second baseman to win a Gold Glove and the first since Davey Lopes in 1978. Neal was the franchise’s first second baseman to win the honor.

The 2009 season marks just the eighth time since the inception of the Gold Glove Award that two Dodgers have won them in the same season.

Buehrle — The Gold Glove capped a memorable 2009season for the White Sox lefty who indelibly etched his name into baseball lore on July 23 when he twirled a perfect game against Tampa Bay at U.S. Cellular Field.

Buehrle, one of the game’s most respected fielding pitchers, earned his Gold Glove in part by leading the American League in pickoffs (8), total chances (55), and assists (41). He tied for the league lead by assisting with five double plays. He committed just one error.

Since the start of the 2001 season, Buehrle leads all major-league pitchers with 63 pickoffs and ranks third with 501 total chances and 373 assists.

Over his 10-year career, Buehrle has allowed just 40 stolen bases in 95 attempts, a 42.1 percent success rate.

Buehrle is the first White Sox player to win a Gold Glove since third baseman Robin Ventura in 1998. Ventura won five Gold Gloves. Current Sox manager Ozzie Guillen won a Gold Glove as the Sox shortstop in 1990.

Rawlings Gold Glove Award — Rawlings established the Gold Glove Award in 1957 as the greatest measure of fielding excellence. The award is presented annually to 18 players — one for each position — in both the American and National leagues. Winners are selected by major-league coaches and managers prior to the conclusion of the regular season. Managers and coaches may not vote for players from their own clubs and only vote for players in their own leagues.

________________________________________________________________________

Joe Jareck (Dodgers public relations) and Scott Merkin (MLB.com) contributed to this story.

Andre Ethier Named Winner of the 2009 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Award

Media

The winner was revealed during a one-hour special, produced by Major League Baseball Productions, that aired on ESPN. Hosted by “Mr. October” Reggie Jackson, who is no stranger to clutch hits, The 2009 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Award Show Presented by Pepsi celebrated the six nominees who consistently delivered clutch performances over the course of the entire 2009 Major League Baseball season. This year’s MLB Pepsi Clutch Performer of the Year nominees were: Andre Ethier, Los Angeles Dodgers; Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers; Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants; Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins; Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals; and Mariano Rivera, New York Yankees.

Ethier set career-highs in 2009 with 160 games played, 162 hits, 31 home runs, 106 RBI, 92 runs scored, 42 doubles and 72 walks while hitting .272 with a .508 slugging percentage and a .361 on-base percentage. The 27-year old outfielder finished fifth in the N.L. with 76 extra-base hits, tied for fifth in doubles, and was tied for sixth in RBI.

Ethier led the Majors with six walk-off hits, including a Major League record four walk-off home runs (tied with Jimmie Foxx in 1940 and Roy Sievers in 1957): June 6th against the Phillies in the 12th inning; June 29th against Colorado in the 13th inning; August 6th vs. Atlanta in the 9th; and September 15th against the Pirates in the 13th. Ethier has a Major League-leading nine walk-off hits since the beginning of the 2008 season, and his six in 2009 are the most in a single-season by any player since at least 1974. The left-handed slugger collected six multi-home run games on the year, tied for second with Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard behind Albert Pujols (10) of the Cardinals. The Arizona State product became just the fourth Dodger in franchise history to amass at least 40 doubles and 30 home runs in the same season, joining Babe Herman (1930), Raul Mondesi (1997) and Eric Karros (1999). On June 26th against Seattle, Andre drove in a career-high six runs and compiled his first career three-homer game, becoming the ninth Dodger in franchise history to accomplish the feat. A second round selection in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft by the Athletics, Ethier recorded two nine-game hitting streaks during the season from June 1st-10th (.400, 14-for-35), and from July 19th-28th (.500, 17-for-24). Since August 2008, Ethier leads the Dodgers with 40 home runs.

During the month of October, Major League Baseball fans voted for the award on pepsiclutch.mlb.com, a site powered by MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, and created specifically for the MLB Clutch Performer Platform.

To further engage fans in the selection process each month, Pepsi introduced an online sweepstakes in conjunction with the award. As part of the program, fans were entered into a season long sweepstakes for a trip for two to the 2009 & 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Games.

Monthly winners of the 2009 MLB Pepsi Clutch Performer of the Month awards include: Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals (April); Melky Cabrera, New York Yankees (May); Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (June); Mark Buehrle, Chicago White Sox (July); Hideki Matsui, New York Yankees (August); and Michael Cuddyer, Minnesota Twins (September). Last season, CC Sabathia was named the recipient of the “2008 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Award Presented by Pepsi.”

Arizona Fall League Heads to Camelback Ranch – Glendale

Media

Uncategorized
<guid
